hi guys,
i found out some interesting information on hair products that contain alcohol. some of you are worried about using a product that will dry out your hair. if you're like me you might look at a particular product's back label to check its list of ingredients for alcohol. i decided to investigate to see what alcohols are acceptable and what alcohols aren't . here's what i found:
---"Not all alcohols are drying. Fatty alcohols (like stearyl and cetyl) found in shampoos and conditioners help hydrate hair. The alcohol ethanol (typically found in hair sprays) can be drying, so hold the spritzer 8-10 inches from your head." http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0846/is_6_22/ai_96277498
and this is interesting...
---"Silicone can be good for hair. Silicone (aka dimethicone) in styling serums may weigh down tresses or lock out moisture if used in excess, though silicone in shampoos and conditioners can help soften hair. Want a crash course in Hair 101? Go to pantene.com. The site offers plenty of information including definitions of product ingredients." http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0846/is_6_22/ai_96277498
Alcohol Descriptions:
(i forgot to add the website link and now i can't find it! &*@#!)
"CETEARYL ALCOHOL: A naturally derived alcohol that provides the creamy consistency of the conditioner and facilitates its application on the hair. Also functions as an additional lubricating and combing aid, helps prevent moisture loss, and adds richness and texture to the conditioner for uniformity of application."
"CETYL ALCOHOL: A fatty alcohol of natural origin that provides the creamy consistency of the conditioner and facilitates its application to the hair. Also functions as an additional lubricating and combing aid, helps prevent moisture loss and adds richness and texture to the conditioner for uniformity of application."
"SD ALCOHOL-40: An exceptional high-purely ethyl alcohol specially denatured to render it unsuitable for human consumption. It functions as the primary vehicle for application of the hair fixative system. Evaporates completely on application without leaving residue. Also acts as a secondary vehicle for styling gel application and provides rapid drying for maximum holding."
Surfacants(other ingredient info):
"the most important ingredients to keep your eyes on are the surfactants. We prefer the sodium laureth sulfate. It is the gentlest of the surfactants but will lather very little which is why most shampoos won't use it. Consumers believe their hair isn't getting clean unless there are tons of bubbles. In truth lather has no beneficial affect and contributes little to good cleaning."

alright, that's all i have time for now. gotta go!
hth!

Thank you! That's very interesting. I have just recently looked at my thermal protector mousse and this has ethyl alcohol as the 2nd ingredient and isopropyl alcohol not very far behind.... I'll need to do some more reading about these.
Btw, here's the link to the description of hair product ingredients: http://www.sunsethair.com/ingredients.htm |

hey! what do you know? that's the website ( http://www.sunsethair.com/ingredients.htm ) i couldn't find again when trying to site my quotes i included in my post. right on, mabs.
isn't it amazing how companies pull the wool over people's eyes just to make their big bucks? so sad. (however, in reality, extremely minor in comparison to all the other sad things in this world).
anyway, here's a story for ya. my friend used to use thermasilk to "protect" her hair when blow drying but after some time her hair turned into something awful. AND, interestingly enough, what was even worse was that she had started badly breaking out all over her forehead which was a new thing for her. finally, because her hair was so dull etc, she stopped using the thermasilk and low and behol her forehead stopped breaking out.
amazing what you learn.
btw, mabsy, what "thermal" product do (did ) you use? |

Well, I'll be sure to stay away from Thermasilk too then! I do sometimes have a problem with breakouts on my forehead due to shampoos - particularly ones with high silicon content (Fructis!).
The stuff I used to use till a few days ago was Wella Perfect Hair. I've now switched to just Frederik Fekkai Glossing Cream. |
