Hello!
I was just browsing thru sephoras website, looking for a foundation and noticed all these foundation primers.
Do you guys use them? What would you recomend?
Also, what is the best lightweight with good coverage foundation?
Something that doesnt feel like drying paint on the skin?
Thanks! |

Do not use foundation primers and I don't know of any make-up artist that does it either. Some use a mattefying base for people with extremely oily skin, but even then, most use a powder afterwards...why...well, the more stuff caked up on top of eachother, the more products can react...and not always in a good way...with eachother.
I don't know what skintype you have, but for the lightest layer yet with coverage, there is one product that I use on almost all model-shoots; Maybelline's wonderfinish. It is cheap, goes on silk-smooth, thin layer gives coverage, last all day, and looks completely natural. Check it here:

If you have super-oily skin, a loose powder on top will set it for the day. Also using gels/serums underneath make-up instead of creams, tend to make make-up more long-lasting.
Personally I use Jane Iredale's pressed powder because it's made of natural minerals. The JI loose powder is more hydrating (amazing base) but more difficult to apply and gives alittle shine, while the JI liquid foundation is nice for aged skin, but gives very little coverage.
Good luck |

Thanks Let us know what you think about it...it's one of those ones that's cheap to try atleast... and if you buy it in a drugstore in the US, I think you even can return it used if you don't like it |

I use La Prarie foundation primer and it helps with covering some redness n evening out skin tone + foundation slides on easily. Sometimes i also use Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, under foundation, which is not exactly a primer but gives a good glow.

Hi BC Girl! I haven't tried the NARS...I'll have to give it a go! On the topic of primers - I always use one - my skin's fave is the Smashbox Photofinish....lots of good texture-specific and skintype specific ones out there ....I'd recommend going to Sephora or other make-up counters and testing the primers with your current foundation ... if you decide to go with one make sure that you have the right type of primer to suit your skin type and your needs. IMHO, stay away from silicone-bases if you are a mineral powder user.. IMHO again, layering appropriate good quality treatment/makeup products suited specifically for your skin type is not a bad thing -- layering unsuitable product -- coupled with the risk of other variables like poor cleansing routine, etc - can be a RX for unmitigated disaster....
Good luck!

I use Laura Mercier primer and it is wonderful. I went to the Nordstrom's counter and they gave me a sample which has lasted months! I try it with or without makeup to see which works best and it does grab well. It isn't oily and I notice it most on a muggy day. But I also got samples of several foundations and that makes the most diffference. No matter how good the primer is it won't work well with a foundation that is too oily or doesn't hold well to begin with. |

I've been using Smashbox primer as well for the last couple of weeks. It feels like pure silk! My concealer, JI pressed and loose base go on well and I'm noticing my foundation isn't changing colour as the day wears on, which is one of the reasons I considered a primer. Plus, I have large-ish pores and I wanted something clear to give me a smoother finish. I was afraid it make my foundation look cakey, it is another layer after all, but it looks even more natural, I'm so impressed with this primer. It has mostly silicones I think so if a person is sensitive to it I would try something else. |

I forgot to mention, Aga, have you tried spritzing or going over your pressed base with the flocked sponge? I couldn't live without my flocked sponge! |
