what is your favorite hair conditioner/treatment? I blow dry my hair daily, I color my hair every 4-5 weeks and it is getting dry and distressed. Oh and of course I am trying to grow it! Not a good combo
I have used mostly Redken type products but I haven't been too impressed. I recently ordered the Ojon restorative hair treatment which I see here as received so so reviews. What products do people like? What works?
PS I live in a dry cold environment as well which likely isn't helping things any and all ideas welcome |

My hairdresser sold me Schwarzkopf Osis Scream which I'm liking a lot. It's a cream that prevents frizz, smooths hair, gives shine and protects it...it's kind of like a moisturizer for hair.
I have super fine, coloured, greasy, and easy to break hair...This stuff doesn't weight it down either. I use a dime size amount on wet hair and let it air dry or blow it.
It's water based too so it's not tackey or sticky feeling. It's got light hold so you may need other product to style. |

I like John Frieda's ( from the Sheer Blonde range) Blonde Repair Treatment which is a creamy buttery, deep conditioning treatment in a big tub. It really helps when my ends are all crunchy!
( you dont have to be blonde, it doesnt know what hair colour you have btw!) |

You need to use both a protein treatment to restore the nutrients to your over-stressed hair, and then you need to use a deep conditioner to moisturize it – preferably one that isn’t loaded down with silicones.
You can make your own protein treatment at home by slathering your hair in some type of oil (i.e.: olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc.). Wash your hair as usual, towel dry. Heat the oil in your microwave for about 6 seconds to warm it. Depending upon your hair length, you would use anywhere from 1 tablespoon to a 1/4 or ½ cup of oil. After you’ve warmed it, apply the oil carefully to your hair, saturating all of the strands thoroughly. Cover your head with a plastic shower cap (it helps retain body heat, turning it into a hot oil/protein treatment). If possible, warm a big, fluffy towel in the clothes dryer for a few minutes then take it out and wrap it around your shower-cap covered head in a turban. Leave the mixture on your hair for anywhere between 30-60 minutes. After the time has elapsed, rinse hair with warm water, shampoo once to remove excess oil and then towel dry hair again, then slather on a moisturizing deep conditioner and leave it on for the recommended amount of time. Rinse and towel dry hair again. If possible, skip the blow drying on weekends and allow your hair to air dry to give it some relief from the daily stress of heat styling. Do this once per week for about 4-6 weeks, then you can cut back to twice per month. |

I just tried the Avocado butter pre shampoo hair treatment by Burt's Bees over the weekend and it left my hair feeling soft and extra-conditioned. You let it sit on your hair for 15 min before washing it off and shampooing like normal (I did my other shower stuff then shampooed last). I think you can also use it as a hair gel too! Anyone else tried it? |

I've been using Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner, it has three oils, olive, almond and another. I like that it's inexpensive and mostly it's easy to come by, living here with access to very little that's actually the most important thing, besides being a great product that is!
I use very little on my thick and corse shoulder length hair. The conditioner is really thick so I use about a 1/4 of an inch dab. I use it on my ends and just to add some softness. I slather it on a week or so after I dye my hair though which has lately been every couple months.
My hair has been soft and manageable, I really like it! |

Thank you! Thank you! Everyone for all your suggestions. I have tried the Avocado butter by Burts Bees before, it seemed to work for awhile and then not so much.
Not sure if I can get the Schwartz... conditioner up here but I will check, and in the meantime I am going to try Carekate's dyi options at home. I have tried Redken Extreme and MOP C-system Recontructing treatment which are supposed to be protein treatments and alternate with Redken All Soft and Smooth Down which are supposed to be moisturizing. But I am still having issues so they are obviously not working for me
As well, I do try to give my hair a break on the weekend and not blow dry it.
Thanks again I will let you know how I fare. |

I am with Carekate on this one, using basic treatments such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil and if your hair is really distressed then Coconut Oil is the bees Knees. I love doing overnight treatment....yes I go to bed wearing a shower cap
Or even just for a couple of hours whilst watching the TV |

ChristineZ, please do keep us posted! I'm surprised that you found that the Burt's bees avocado butter treatment stopped working...I've been happy with it and like how a little of it goes a long way.
Do you think that different conditioners/treatments work differently on different hair types? |

I'm happy with the Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm which has kept my chemically processed hair from turning into straw. After shampoo I use a towel to mop up as much moisture as possible, then apply the balm and leave on for a few minutes. The extra step of drying between shampoo and conditioner is meant to remove moisture from the hair shaft and allow the treatment to penetrate and do its job. This was a tip from my stylist and it really works for me. HTHS
Oh, let me add - I have yet to try Kerastase but I keep reading great reviews/recs in fashion/beauty magazines. |

Sorry I haven't made any replies as of late but I couldn't find the topic anywhere. I must have been blind.
Thanks again everyone. i am on the hunt today to see which products are available in town. It is hard sometimes when you live this far north, things tend to be hard to get a hold of And the really weird thing is that although we have about 7 salons in town they are overwhemingly stocked with mainly Redken/Crew products These don't seem to be working for me so it is a bit frustrating. Oh well it is just hair after all
As well I will try and find some coconut oil or jojoba oil that Carekate had been recommending. I do have Olive oil in the house but the Jojoba and Coconut just sound more moisturizing Likely just in my head but hey go with your gut
ApplePie: not sure what happened with Burts Bess. Maybe it is because I color my hair? I also realize that grey hairs (which I have ) tend to be coarser then the rest of my fine hair.
Belle: I have been looking into Kerastase products and wondered if they live up to the hype. I may look into ordering these online if my latest purchase of the Ojon reconstructing hair treatment does not work. This has not arrived in the mail yet and it seems by the reviews to be a love it or hate it product. Luckily it has a 30 money back guaruntee
Crazyskin: I have only tried one line in the biolage products and wasn't too thrilled but it was not specifically for dry hair so that maybe the problem. I do know that this product line is carried in town so that in itself is a bonus.
I will keep you posted and thanks again for all the ideas!

FYI - Kerastase products are made by L’oreal. L’oreal just so happens to make a much lower priced line of products called “Natures Therapy” which are nearly identical to the more ‘prestigious’ Kerastase products. I can personally recommend the Natures Therapy “Mega Moisture Nuturing Creme” conditioner, along with the matching shampoo. You can buy trial-size packets of these products containing between 3-5 applications (depending upon your hair length) for $1.99USD at local Sally’s Beauty supply stores and you can get a jumbo-sized tub of the conditioner for around twelve bucks. I believe the equivilent Kerastase product costs around $40??
Anyway, most of the Kerastase *and* Natures Therapy conditioners contain silicones so I wouldn’t recommend using them every day, but I love giving my dry, over-processed hair a special treat every weekend. First I do my homemade protein treatment (jojoba/olive/coconut oil), and follow it up with the Natures Therapy MM conditioner which I leave on for around 20 minutes or sometimes as long as a couple of hours, if I get involved in watching a movie or something! |

P.S. I tried both the Biolage Ultra-Hydrating balm and their Fortifying Conditioning balm and both of them actually TURNED my chemically-treated hair to straw!!
In fact, I actually have ½ a tub of the fortifying conditioner left that I’m currently using as a shaving cream! If anyone actually likes this product and can give it a good home, I’d be glad to ship the remainder to you so PM me if you’re interested.... |

Hi carekate first things first... happy birthday!!! Hope you're having a blast!
Sorry to hear the Biolage UHB did not work out for you. I tend to switch shampoo/conditioner brands a lot but I have stuck to this product for years now because of the great results. I guess this underscores the fact that one person's HG is another's garbage. |

Well I did it. I pour luke warm olive oil all over my head What a mess! The best part was when my cat got involved and decided that she would like some olive oil too only she was eating it It was pretty funny everytime I tried to dip my hand in the cup to get more olive oil she was all over me licking up whatever she could! Too funny.
The results very favorable My hair felt very soft today the day after the treatment and that for me is the clincher. I have tried a few products that make my hair feel fine the day of the treatment but the next day my hair just reverts to it's original damaged condition.
So a big thanks to Carekate for helping my hair on to the road of recovery
I also invested in an inexpensive conditioner which I now think I love. Aussie 3 minute Deep Conditioner. An oldy but a goody. I remember this stuff from high school but it is really helping my hair way more than the other salon products I have tried thus far!
I guess the next step is to likely alternate between home coloring and salon to get my hair back into shape and a good haircut.
Thanks again Ladies I will let you know if there are any more issues |

PS
Happy Birthday Carekate !
thanks for the low down on Kerastase products and Natures Therapy. I agree that you are likely paying for the name more than the product with Kerastase. I will see if anyone carries Natures Therapy up here but it is unlikely Oh well as I have said I am currently happy with my Aussie 3 min deep conditioner
Crazyskin: I am a bit reluctant to try the Biolage line again as I've said it just wasn't moisturizing enough for me but it does smell really good
Have a great Halloween Everyone! |
