I have seen a few threads recently asking about Japanese skincare and I realized that it is very popular overseas, but often incredibly hard to get (or super expensive).
A colleague and I were meeting recently to discuss some options to vary our business in 2005 and one idea we toyed with was a website selling Japanese lines to overseas clients.
we want to avoid mainstream lines like Shiseido, Kose, SKII, Awake, etc. (unless there is a "die-for" product not sold overseas).
At the moment we are thinking:
Dr. Ci-labo
Rice Force
Proherb (propolis and herbs)
La Casta (rose based line)
Menard (maybe)
Also, a question. For products shipped internationally, how much are you usually willing to pay? $15? |

I have heard a lot of rave reviews for Dr Ci-labo product. I don't know if I would pay $15 for shipping though. That seems like a lot!!! |

I have heard many good reviews about Dr. Ci-labo products!! This is definately a must to include in ur business.
Rice Force is another one that's very famous now in Japan... i really wanna get this stuff , but it's so hard to find .. i think they just selling it in Japan only.
Mernard is another good one also, but i think there're many ppl selling it, even i can get it from the shopping mall around here.
Well .. i'll probably be the first one who purchase from ur shop!
About the shipping cost .. $15 is okay, you can also do like shipping free...for over $150 or $200 |

Thanks for the tip on Menard. I think we will take that off the list of possibilities. We really only want to do items that cannot be purchased easily outside Japan.
There is another brand here that uses nanotechnology (I have not quite worked out what nanotechnology is going to do for my skin ) called Nano Acqua (www.nanoacqua.com) that is supposed to be very good. It is quite a high-end product, with the cleansing bars running at $30 odd each and the creams over $100.
As for shipping, we have been thinking that EMS is best (express and insured fully) and in Japan once the weights get up there it is actually cheaper than parcel post.
But the base rate (up to 300g/10oz) is 1200 yen (about US$11.50 at the moment). The next level (500g/just over 1lb) is 1500 yen (just over $14). The bulk discount is 10%. We can probably do a flat rate of $10 maybe and then the $300 free, kind of like they do here on EDS. |

I am an Asian, I can share with the products I have used:
Dr Ci Labo collagen gel
it's a clear gel, all-in one (toner, hydrated mositure & whitening).the sales suggests to use like the size of a nickle, pat over your face. to me, it's notmositure enough for very dry weather & too stick for the summer. But it's a great product for oil to combination skin.
I ve tried the samples of peeling I & II, it's the BEST product to remove dead skins. I is a cream apply over your face, wait tilo they absorbs then apply II (like a toner), rub the dead skins out after the toner is dry. leaves my skin soooooooo smooth, but it's pricey ($120 for 2).
the whitening product is very sticky, can't comment on the result becuase i used samples.
Menard
heard good comments on the products, mom used their eye cream, she loves it besides her favourite valmont eye contour.
other brands i have not heard of it
i used shu umera, shiseido ( i could never get the spelling right), sofina...
skII is not as good as it said, they're paying so much for the big stars to advertise their products.
kose - many ppl loves it, they have different lines.
let me know which brand or product you'd want to know more about, see if i can help |

How about the Mernard whitening products?
The sale told me that the whitening line is very efective, but didn't try. |

I know I'm replying to this thread a little late, but where can you buy Menard products online? I love Japanese skincare products and I have the hardest time finding them in the states (I used to live in Okinawa and loved trying random products.) I haven't been able to find this brand readily available and I've wanted to try it, so I just wondered if I was missing an obvious store or something.
Thanks!! |

I find myself ordering from international companies when they have minimum orders with free shipping. For example, I only bought from Godiva because they offered free FedEX shipping with $50 or over purchases. If it's an absolute outstanding hard to find product, I have also paid $18 flat international shipping rates from dubai - but was very apprehensive my first time to spend that much.
The minimum orders are a good marketing idea, because I found myself adding items to try I normally wouldn't in order to qualify for the free shipping - so maybe one good strategy would be to charge $10 shipping for any purchase under $X and free shipping for over $X - that gives incentive for ppl to buy more! |

there is also this line for sensitive skins in japan called le mieux. the products are very light and are suitable for younger skins..has anybody tried it? i bought it from loft when i was in tokyo. i find it quite good for hot summer days
the thing with these japanese products is that everything is in japanese and i always have to guess how to use them..it would be great if there were translations! |

diderot,
You can order fancl from their website. Also check your local japanese markets. My local market has a fancl stand with products.
tiger_tim,
I would like to add albion on your list of products to consider. Read too many raves for this line yet it is only available in asia... |
