I am familiar with the term purging, but have questions about it.
What is the difference between purging and irritation/allergic reaction and how can you tell?
Is purging supposed to be associated as a kind of detox word for your skin?
Forgive me and I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance but I am skeptical about products that makes things get worse before it "gets better". |

Not sure if I can help, but this is how I understand purging: If you tend to break out or have acne, it will get worse "purge" before it gets better. If you have an allergic reaction or irritation it usually shows up as swelling, red, itchy, bumps etc....

Purging only applies to acne products that clear out pores or increase cell turn over. It take weeks for a pimple to fully develop and become visible on the skin. When you start new products like BHA or retinoids, they speed up the process of clearing out your pores. So you may have a big breakout (purging) at first. Not every one has lots of purging. This can clear or quick or last weeks for some as it takes several weeks to have full turn over in the skin. Just depends on your skin.
Bad reaction is usually more rash like but can appear to look like acne also. The pimples associated with this are usually different from your normal acne. |

Purging refers to getting rid of whatever is impure or undesirable. Irritation/allergic reaction is due to something that your system isn't tolerating and you should stop using it.
If you are using a product that is causing you lots of redness, irritation and pain I would recommend you stop using it. If the product is taking impurities out of your system, such as previously mentioned, acne getting a bit worse until it gets better, then I would suggest you struggle through that process and you would be happy with the results at the end. |
