What is your favorite low-end and/or high-end powder foundation? Currently I don't really use any makeup but am looking for a simple makeup regimen. Want a flawless yet light, youthful/dewy complexion.
Anyone have any recommendations for product line or all-in-one kits I could try

MAC Studio Fix Powder foundation, I just brush on, apply a little concealer to any blemishes, blush and spritz to set. |

My skin does tend to dry out so should I look for any special ingredients? I really don't want to look cakey/flakey and all made-up It always seems that the stars have fabulous flawless glowy make-up....how do they do this and how can I re-create that look at home and on a budget
I don't ask for much do I |

I tried out a few different smaller brands. You should order a few different samples and see what works for you. Ingredients in most are pretty much the same, but proportion is different I guess.
I now use Dechant Minerals - found my perfect color (they actually mixed it up for me custom 50/50 of 2 colors they carry separately). Plus it has green tea extract, ascorbic acid and a couple of other good things.
And it wears great!
(But again, I think trying out different ones is important.) |

Using MUA I have narrowed it down to a couple cheaper (?) brands to try:
Revlon Skinlights loose powder
Covergirl Trublend powder foundation
Smashbox wet/dry foundation
Anyone tried or use these?
Also, is a powder right for my skin type or should I be looking for a liquid. Was thinking powder simply for ease of use. |

I've been experimenting with different foundations these last couple months, I am partial to the compact powder foundations, has to be at least medium coverage to even out my hyperpigments.
Of the three you mentioned I have tried TruBlend powder foundation. I LOVE the texture!!! It's not really dry but isn't too oily either, believe me, some pressed powders are not for controlling oil on a really oily face because some companies (see my comments on MAC studio fix below) add so many moisturizers to them. But TruBlend I loved and only had to touch it up a couple times, I was shopping out of town all day. If I was at home or just running errands for a couple hours it would have been fine and wouldn't bother touching up the shine at home. It never looked powdery or cakey. But, and it's a big one, the shades are all wrong from me. Way too orange. You may find the right shade though, there are a lot of ladies who like this stuff and I really can see why.
I also tried MAC Studio fix powder foundation $28 CAD plus shipping recently (last week actually) and the colour was absolutely perfect and so was the texture, not powdery or cakey at first, but as the day wore on, I became really oily, I even started breaking out the second day, so sad. Sent it right back to MAC the next day. It's worth looking into though there are lot of combo/oily skinned ladies who swear by this product, the cost is not too steep, compared to other department store brands, and the shades are the best out there, imo. I just wish I was lucky enough to be able to use it. The cost of TruBlend and MAC aren't that much off when you consider you get more in the MAC.
Also, I've tried Quo (Shopper's Drugs) Wet/Dry powder foundation and I like it but I think the shade is a bit ashy but I've only tried one so far. Check out the Productville reviews, they aren't too bad. The display had the sample foundations under plexiglass and on the bottom shelf where you can't really pick a shade to save your life because the lighting was so bad, I guess it's trial and error. It's not the least expensive, about $17, but you get more than TruBlend. The texture is also really great, very soft finish, not cakey. For moisture it's somewhere between the TruBlend and MAC Studio Fix for me, definitely not dry.
Another option would be creamy compact foundations that are far more moisturizing and still in the easy to carry and apply compact. I think MAC Studio Tech fits into this category.
And there are always tinted moisturizers you could try out, especially if you want to ease yourself into foundation use slowly, not much of a learning curve with those products. I know for sure Cover Girl makes one. |

I forgot to mention all of the mineral powder foundations I've tried, with my recommendations I stuck to the drug store or locally available reasonbly priced ones I had tried.
But, the small mineral foundation companies are so great! I've tried Alpha Skin Care, Pure Luxe, Cory's and I have a Bare Faced Minerals order on the way. They are all reasonbly priced but you have to order from the US. I've also used Jane Iredale pressed and loose, very nice but I couldn't find a proper shade and the bismuth added was blocking my pores and it's an obscene price. Same goes for Bare Escentuals (more reasonably priced) and gloMinerals, all mineral foundations.
I've heard of Cover Fx mineral foundations available at Shopper's but I haven't tried it. |

Thanks everyone for the replies
I recently tried youngblood mineral makeup powder/foundation and like the coverage factor but found that it settled into any fine lines that I have and accentuate them and I mean truly little, very fine lines but they are there ....now this may just be all in my head afterall I never wear any makeup at all so maybe I am just not used to it
I am thinking about trying Smashbox cosmetics. They have a few products that peak my interest. Anyone use this line
And I think I can purchase them (and hopefully try samples) at my local Shopper's Drug Mart. |

I am in love with the new one from Covergirl ( so the price is a dream too!) Tru Blend Powder Foundation. It covers perfectly, I dont even need a concealer ( great over the top of Smashbox Photofinish primer) and does not look cakey when my own oil starts to come through later. You can touch up and it all mixes in and looks very natural with the sponge provided. I can use either Buff Beige or Creamy Natural both of which are good for fair skin tones.
I normally like more expensive foundations ( love Lancome Teinte Idole -enduring) but the TruBlend Covergirl one beats the lot so far! Dont make the mistake of getting the TruBlend pressed powder in the ROUND silver compact... you wont get any coverage(unless thats what you want!) .... the foundation is in the new oval shaped silver compact. I have also used Covergirl's Fresh complexion pocket foundation compact ( thats nice too).... its in a blue compact, it is not as good as the new Tru Blend though, it is really, reallllly good! |
