OK - So I did it. I gave up on all the lip plumping products out there and got injections...Yes, I gave in...(but it didn't cost me - it was a gift from my sister)..So here's what happened: Last week I had restylane (hyaluronic acid) injected into my lip line (all around my mouth)......the "left-over" restylane from the vial was injected into my number 11 lines between my eyes....the cost was $500 Canadian...Did it hurt? Indeed it did - it wasn't extremely painful but it was more uncomfortable than I expected...First, she froze the area (two needles up into the inside of my upper lip)...it wasn't pleasant...my face froze from just above my chin to just below my eyes...Even though I was frozen - I still felt the needles going into my lips....and it was uncomfortable (I was very surprised)....There was no freezing done between my brows...it stung a bit in that area when she stuck the needle in - but not nearly as much as did my lips.....the sensation between my brows made me feel like sneezing......The result? Fantastic. I am really pleased with the look of my lips and the fact that the lines between my brows have pretty much disappeared(for now)without any loss of muscular activity in that area really pleases me....It's supposed to last somewhere around 4 months (we'll see...)...Would I do it again? Maybe...I've had my breasts done....but the reason for that was "desperation" due to a major weight loss - I was entirely embarrassed of my breasts and desperately wanted to feel "normal" hence the surgery....the lip plumping and brow smoothing adventure was purely aesthetic...I certainly wasn't devastated by the appearance of my lips or brow area prior to the procedure - so there was some degree of an uncomfortable feeling - as if I had done something to change myself (that I didn't really need to do...)It, at times, makes me feel ridiculously indulgent since the whole thing was neither medically nor emotionally necessary - I kind of felt like I had rejected myself and changed my self unnecessarily...it was a strange feeling...hard to explain...anyways - it's done, I did it - I'm plumped for now...but not convinced that I'd do it again...I just thought I'd share just in case anyone out there was thinking about doing it (there are alot of lip posts out there!)

Wow, Pudoodles! It sounds great! The two things you've had done I would like as well and $500 is really not *that* much, too bad it doesn't last longer though. How much extra volume did get in your lips?
I had been wondering how you were, hadn't seen you post much lately. Thank you so much for sharing and keep us updated. Annette |

Thanks Guapa and Lolli! I didn't do anything too dramatic - I plumped the lip line - which pulled my actual lips up and out...so my mouth looks alot poutier without looking plumped "outwards" - my mouth looks fuller and wider....It looks great....but I'm still surprised by the OUCH factor! Oh yes - and I had a bit of bruising on my lips!!

Pudoodles,
I was not going to tell but as you have fessed up I did exactly the same thing last week. Yep even with the lip numbing injection it hurt, but I now have a slightly wider, thicker top lip. Not so much that it is glaringly apparent but enough to smooth out those above lip smokers lines (sinful, I know). I also had the btx. I think I just look refreshed, which is exactly what a couple of my friends said (I didn't tell them). One of these days I am going to go for the full surgery.
My guy used something that is made from the same stuff as restalyne but has smaller molecules, he recons it should last about a year. Yippeee. |

I agree, if it makes you feel better, all power to ya! I used to think that I would never get surgery, that I was't *that* vain, etc, but really, it has more to do with being total wimp when it comes to physical pain and not being able to justify the cost...yet. If I were given a gift of these two proceeders, I would it do it in a second!
I have plump lips already, about 13-15 ml top lip, I want MORE! It's like a fetish with me, sexual? Ya, maybe. I get a kick out of my plump lips. It wouldn't make me feel better persay, I do like looking sexy though. This should be renamed the confession thread.
My brother has weird piercing, yes, down there and he has his ears completely covered with piercing, not his face though. And tattoos. Maybe it's genetic. |

A year?! That's great, Loopylori! He must have used the Perlane which is the thicker equivalent of REstylane - good for you! I am SO curious about the Botox....where did you get it done? Did it hurt? Were you nervous at all?

Hi all - I've had Zyderm (collagen) injected into a couple of depressed spots on my face and the leftover into my lips (to use it all up) when I've been in particularly self-critical moods. Years ago, I just had the lips done (this began in the late '80s when really full lips became the ideal). I've only done it a handful of times though because it HURTS LIKE A MOTHER RAPER even when anaesthetic cream or Novacaine is applied first Lord, it hurts enough to prevent me from doing it very regularly, but I agree the effect is nice while it lasts.
Botox is great for the faint fret lines between my brows. If they were worse, I'd do it more often. It's not nearly as sensitive an area as the mouth, and the doctor does it very quickly.
Pudoodles, I'm surprised Restylane is only supposed to hold up 4 mos. since it's touted as being much more durable than Zyderm. In fact, I was going to give it a try myself. Please keep us posted about how long-lasting the results are. I found that after about 3 mos., the Zyderm wore off (the more dynamic the treatment area is, the more fleeting the effect). I'm so appreciative you're willing to share your experience and anxious to see how much you like it a few months from now.
Lori - I'm not sure if Perlane is approved for use in the US yet, but I'd like to know how durable your results are too, if you don't mind telling us (and the whole damn world, as it is).

Hi,
I like botox, I had it before about 2 years ago and loved the result, I just cannot afford to have it done regularly but I am going to carry on with the relaxaline and see if the results are maintained for longer. I don't find the botox injections painful at all and I am a big girls blouse when it comes to pain.
I will let you know how long the lips last.
I wish I was brave enough to have surgery. |

I've been tempted to get something minor done round the eyes..its my one ageing feature until I win the lottery and have a major swan like overhaul. Have to ask, how did you pick the clinic? they're springing up all over the place and I'd want to go somewhere they know what they're doing |

Hi M.april -- the restylane is not as thick as perlane (sister product)...and is usually used for fine lines and boosting the lipline....the molecule is smaller than that in Perlane so it doesn't last as long....the perlane is used to significantly augment the lips, fill in heavy smoking lines and areas of the face that need plumping or heavy filling in...it lasts much longer....I'll be sure to keep you posted re: how long the restylane lasts - hopefully I'll get more than 4 months out of it!

You know, they did a segment on “60 Minutes” a couple of months ago where all of these North Americans are flying to India and/or Thailand to have cosmetic and/or medical procedures done. Apparently it’s a fraction of the cost over there, and the hospital facilities are more like some swanky spa/resort than a traditional hospital environment. All of the doctors who practice over there are actually educated in the West, so it’s not like they’re some fly-by-night graduates of some shady medical school in Guadalajara or the Dominican Republic. They interviewed one patient who went over there to have some kind of heart bypass surgery that would have cost upwards of a $100K in the U.S., but which only cost about $5,000 over there. The patients are liking the treatment they got so much that they go back for followup procedures, or bring their friends or family members to get work done.
I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but getting cosmetic surgery done in the U.S. can be really tricky unless you actually go to a board certified plastic surgeon. I’ve seen too many horrific stories of botched procedures where patients go in for a discount boob job, only to ended up mutilated for life because the “doctor” who performed the procedure was actually a dentist who attended a weekend seminar on how to do breast augmentations then set up shop and starting cutting up women. This phenomena is especially rampant in Florida, California and New York. Basically the lesson to be learned is if the price they quote you to get your boobs done or your belly lipo-ed is too good to be true, then run as far and as fast as you can!!
Anyway, I’m quite envious of Loops’ and Pudoodles’ new pouts even though my own lips aren’t exactly stingy themselves, but I don’t think I could ever be able to tolerate the pain and discomfort. You know, Pudoodles description of being able to feel the needle stuck through her lip/s reminds me of something my older brother used to do to terrorize me:
Before I went to the dentist for the first time, Denny told me that the dentist would stick a super-long needle through my cheeks – the needle would be stuck inside one cheek and would protrude from the outside of the other cheek. So that first time I sat in the dentist’s chair, utterly terrified as the dentist and/or hygienist reached for one tool or another while they were cleaning my tooth. I nearly died of fright when the dentist picked up that sharp little pick-scraping thing and told me to open wide.... And I won’t even tell you about how Denny terrorized me with the baby tarantulas! Is it any wonder I turned out to be slightly neurotic??!
Anyway, to get back to the point I was trying to make: for any of you North Americaners thinking about having some plastic surgery procedure done but are deterred by the price tag, you should seriously research and investigate going to India or Thailand to get the work done, especially if you’re thinking about a serious “swan-like” overhaul.... |

Oh, wait, I actually had a question for Lori and/or Pudoodles: when the restylane or whatever begins to breakdown and your lips deflate, are your lips left kinda stretched out and droopy? In my head, I have this picture of a balloon, you blow air into it and it stretches and fills up and out, but when you let the air back out, the balloon is still slightly stretched out of shape, even though there isn’t anything filling it up any more. Is that how it works with the lips? I’m just wondering if once you make the commitment to have your lips augmented, if you have to keep doing it forever just so your lips don’t look all saggy and droopy....
Is that how it is, or am I just worried about nothing?? |

carekate - my lips never looked stretched out after lip augmentation wore off, but I guess it could depend on how much filler was injected. I've only had a bit injected in the top "vermilion border" though.
I agree with your comment about any old MDs jumping on the cosmetic surgery bandwagon with little training to back them up (didn't know dentists did this too - yikes!). But I'd be wary of travelling such a great distance to have serious medical treatment -- what if complications arise once you're home? |

Hee Hee Carrie,
No ! well at least when I had it done years ago, the stuff just sort of dissolves gradually I think so you don't really notice it going. |
