okay, so give me moral support here people, i've been looking at hair straighteners for the last while (my hair is really fine but very curly which equals fuzzy, curly mess mostly) so i've finally splashed out (after getting a fab new do this afternoon) on some ghds...
i can't even bear to type what they cost (remember in nz things are always more expensive due to us being so far away and the exchange rate) but i just hope i've done the right thing, although i've wanted them for ages so really i shouldn't be too worried!
it is just a rather significant amount of money to spend on one... small... item that's not jewellery!
tell me i'm not crazy!!!

OK Kiwigirl, I have no idea how much you spent and for what specifically so this is just a general advice.
Strategy #1: When I have spent more than I expected or budgetted for I "amortize" the cost. I do this by figuring out the cost per use. A $600 jacket, for example, that I can use for 3 seasons of the year for a couple of years would be $100 per season, or $33 per month, or about $8 per week, etc. The beauty of this is that the costs keep going down and that makes me feel better immediately
Strategy #2: If whatever I've purchased is making me happy, hey, who's to say what the price of my happiness should be? (Note: level of happiness sharply increases when one finally gets what has been desired for a long time - ergo, the cost of Kiwigirl's purchase could approach gazillions and still be justified! )
If all else fails -
Strategy #3: Go back to the store and politely ask to return the stuff. (Caution: this step may require pleading/begging/threatening not to leave until you get your way).
This is admittedly not the best advice, but I sure hope I've at least gotten a laugh out of you. And no, you're not crazy. Truly crazy people never question their sanity. |

Crazyskin,
GHD'S are a worthwhile investment. We have had ours at least a couple of years they are great.
There is no point having beautiful glowing skin if your hair looks a mess. Now you have your hair under control you will be totally beautiful from the top of your head downwards, so you see they are a necessary accessory like shoes and handbags. Keep telling yourself how lovely you look every time you use them. They are an investment in your future happiness. I bet they didn't cost anywhere near what you have spent on skincare and I know how much they cost. You have the rolls royce in hair care. Enjoy them.
If that does not convince you just think to yourself that whilst you are straightening your hair your hands are too occupied to be typing in credit card numbers and buying more face stuff, so you see you are now saving money on other stuff. |

If what you bought makes you feel beautiful, it's worth every penny. I'm serious about that.
I wore a new leather skirt the other day, which I did not need and was very expensive, but it fit perfectly and I felt like I could conquer the world. Don't regret the impulse buy ONE BIT. |

okay so you guys are so fantastic!
loopylori - you are SOOOOO right about having great skin needing great hair - now i think about it that's the exact thing i've been missing for the past year. all my efforts with my skincare have been sort of sidelined by the fuzzy nightmare atop my head! and when i think about everything i've spent on skincare and not used *sharp intake of breath as i calculate that* then *sharp intake of breath as i write this* $400 on ghds isn't so bad...
crazyskin - i LOVE the calculations! whenever i would buy anything expensive i'd do something similar, makes it seems not quite so bad really!
AND when i think that i spent only $50 more and got a cool kit roll with 6 small bottles of ghd products (worth well more than $50) then i really have made a wise investment!
AND when i calculate the cost over a couple of years it's not so bad...
AND i felt like 5million bucks last night when i made kiwiboy take me out for dinner (although the hangover today is taking a bit of a shine of it!)
Kiwigirl (feeling fabulous and not guilty at all, after all they are also an investment in my job hunting next year!)
phredd4 - ghds are very expensive (should be gold-plated) hair straightening irons, and i wouldn't recommend the heart strain of considering buying them!!! |

Well if $400.00 made you feel like 5 million, then it was worth every penny. Can't count the $50.00's I've spent to end up looking horrible |

Love the logic of this! Imagine how much the savings will amount to over a few months!!!
Kiwigirl, go strut your stuff! I have naturally wavy hair and I've always longed for a straight, shiny & sleek style myself. *Now* might be a good time for me to stop watching this thread, before I'm tempted to follow in your footsteps |

Classic!
Kiwigirl - I hope you're very happy with your purchase and I bet your hair looks fab! I've had my eye on GHDs for a while but just couldn't part with that much cash (like in NZ, in Australia these are $$$$). I bought much cheaper ones and, while I am happy with them, I am still tempted to buy GHDs to see what the difference is |

Kiwigirl dont worry I used to be the same feeling like I'm being too extravagent when spending alot on something. The way I see it,I dont waste money on smoking, gambling or drugs so why not?At least my money is going on things that arent doing me harm and I've got something to show for it! Enjoy!!!!P.s you can always sell it if you decide it wasnt worth the money
Also mabsy if you decide you want to try the GHD its heaps cheaper to buy from somewhere like HQhair.About $160/170au I heard.Much better than $300! |

I am absolutely amazed that GHD is an unheard of brand both in Canada and the USA and when I go back to the UK it is everywhere!! |

hello all - an update on the gold plated ghds...
well, i had a school reunion on saturday night so thought i'd straighten my hair for it (you know, you have to look good at these things) and my mum and kiwiboy were totally blown away by how good it looked!
and it was SOOOOOO easy it was ridiculous! it took all of about 5 minutes and i was hot and stylish and looked like someone else, felt like well more than 5 million bucks that's for sure!
so, the upshot is that it was $XXX well spent! i am so stoked with how good it looks and the fact that it is easy makes it even better!!!
thank you all for your comments, isn't it amazing how we can rationalise buying expensive things when we need to!
sheesh, i'm raving now and look at all the exclamation marks in this post, i have now officially lost my mind (although the fact that i've hardly had any sleep is probably related).

Yeah, I've thought about it. Though I would need a power adaptor for it I think... I'll stick with mine for now - fingers crossed anyway, I don't want to spend more money!!!!
Kiwigirl - Very happy to hear that you looked fab! I hope you had a great time as well! |

Women definately have the right to look beautiful...I keep telling myself that
I just ordered another pair of jeans online because it was on sale
I have never tried that pair of jeans before and have no idea about how it would fit. I definately don't need another pair of jeans Especially when my bank account is crying from starvation
Online shopping is so addictive ...need help |

It's money.
You can either spend it on yourself, or let people fight over it when you're dead. |

Wildcat, just remember:
Jeans can be paired with a blazer and loafers for business casual, a spangled top and heels for dancing the night away, a sweatshirt and sneakers for errands, a fleece jacket and Wellies to shovel snow, a t-shirt and cowboy boots for the pub, and a pressed cotton blouse with turquoise jewelry for a lunch date.
So the jeans were a bargain, as far as I'm concerned.
I'm very good at this rationalization thing if anyone needs it in the future. |
