Product:
Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion
Background on my hair:
(Please note that I'll be including this info with all my haircare product reviews so that it can be referenced individually with each review.) I think it's really important when reading haircare reviews to know exactly what kind of hair the reviewer has as this can be crucial in trying to decide whether the product might work for you.
My own hair is a nightmare. No exaggeration. It's frizzy, is curly/ringlets/waves/straight/kinky all at the same time, flyaway, very dry, damaged, coloured and highlighted to cover 2/3 grey. I wear it below shoulder length. Because of its condition, I only wash it 2 or 3 times a week - any more than that and it becomes even less manageable, drier and more damaged-looking. When I do wash my hair, I use a special Babyliss drier that dries using heat (with an electric hob-style element), rather than blowing. Even then, I use it for only around 30 seconds, leaving my hair to dry fully naturally. Anything else turns my hair into a ball of frizz.
Review:
I need a product that will enhance curls and help to control my hair, cutting down on frizz and flyaways. Although I'm pretty happy with my current Bumble & Bumble Curl Conscious Styling Crème for Fine Hair, I'm always on the lookout for something better. There were some very positive reviews on the official Kevin Murphy site for this, with people claiming that it made their curls look nicer, so I thought I'd give it a try - even though it's not actually under the "Curly Hair" products section. However, it is called a "Curl Enhancing Lotion".
It comes in a fairly contemporary-looking, rectangular container with a screw-on/flip-top lid. The size is 150ml.
The blurb on the back states: "A curl enhancer and frizz control in a weightless absorbing lotion for a sexy look and feel."
The directions advise you to apply a small amount to damp hair and scrunch into the ends and mid-lengths.
Texture-wise, this is definitely a lotion, but not too thin, so it's pretty easy to handle. It's also easy to apply.
Fragrance-wise, this is a winner for me, with a fresh, slightly herby floral scent. You can detect the gorgeous geranium smell. Not over-powering, just lovely and natural.
I used the Motion Lotion as a straight replacement for my Bumble & Bumble Curl Crème. So I washed and conditioned my hair as usual, then I applied Sebastian Potion 9 as a leave-in treatment. Finally, I combed the Motion Lotion through my damp hair (I need control all the way through, not just the ends and mid-lengths). As usual, I scrunched whilst very briefly blasting my hair with my Babyliss radiant heat hairdryer. I then left it to dry the rest of the way naturally.
I can confirm that this is certainly a light-weight product. There was some crunch in my hair, but that mostly dissipated after I ran my fingers through to style it.
Whilst the product did a reasonable job of controlling frizz, it didn't seem to enhance my curls all that much. The first day wasn't so bad, but by the next day, my hair was more wavy than curly. Neither did the Motion Lotion give me the slight weight that my hair needs in order to tame it.
In conclusion, I'd say that this could possibly work well for those who need a lighter product, but it just wasn't enough for my crazy hair. Also, it's not the most effective curl enhancer I've ever used.
Ah well, looks like it's back to Bumble & Bumble for me. I'll be trying Kevin Murphy's Easy Rider next, though, so let's see how that fares.
