Is there a proven treatment for removing skin pigmentation that I got through pregnancy and it hasn't gone away yet in 8 years? A patch on my cheeks and a little on my forehead. I have olive skin. I have used Dermologica products for cleansing for this reason etc for 6 MONTHS and no effect. I can't afford to waste any more money? ANyone had any luck with other Dermo tratements?

I think what you are referring to is called Melasma (aka "the mask of pregnancy"). One of my friends who recently had a child has a large patch above her lip. She's been getting good results from hydroquinone (from a derm). I have also read reviews of SkinCeuticals Primacy Phyto+ which have been very positive.

I've had to deal with Melasma on my upper lip from birth control pills. Looks like a mustache! I've tried everything (laser pulse, retin-A/hydroquinone, kojic acid, papaya ....) My problem is that I also have sensitive skin. I read a book that suggested MSM supplements. Since taking it, I'm able to go out without cover-up. My fiance says it's gone, but I'm still traumatized over it and look for it. Now I've been having good results with Vitamin C and am looking into Skinceuticals. FYI I have Asian skin. MSM supplement works well on the recovery process on scars too. I have a burn mark on my finger and after taking MSM for only a few days, the scar was gone. Smile

Could someone please explain to little-not-clued-in me what MSM stands for? This sounds like a bit of info that some of my friends might be interested in.

MSM stands for Methyl-SULFONYL_Methane. My sister recommended me taking it, she has been taking it for 2 years, the reason she takes it because MSM helps her hair and nail and skin grows better and stronger. I had not seen her for years and last time I saw her, she had more hair than I remembered.

One more suggestion, my doctor gives me this cream " Tazarotene" to use as a mask and leave on face for 15 min. She said this is the only prescription cream that targets at not only pigmentation and acne but also well as fine line and wrinkle. However, it may cause irration for sensitive skin and dryness. You may ask your doctor about this cream whether it suits your skin type or not.

I had some good results from a series of 6 glycolic peels. I had a pigmentation mark on my face, from a pimple that I had inadvertently swiped with a very large ring. Ouch. The mark has now faded a lot now(still slightly visible to me, but it disappears once I have a smidgen of BE bisque on it, and my other half can't notice it at all), and I'm careful to cover my face with copious amount of suncream to prevent it happening again.

I do however have 2 little marks on my chest, from where my lovely little kitten had her claws stuck into me (literally stuck, her claws were caught in my skin, she got freaked and tried to jump off, and she was still stuck..) and they've faded a little with application of glycolic acid, but they are still so very visible Sad

I will try to see if I can find this MSM, I hope it works!

Hello Everyone,

Here's my 2 cents worth. MSM is related to the sulfur family and sulfur does wonderful things for the hair, skin and nails. MSM also has pain relieving properties for those who are afflicted with arthritis.

The only side effect I have heard of is that it may cause stomach upset in some people. The answer for this is to take it after a meal. Other than that it is relatively harmless.

Mabsy and Bic145: I am not too sure if MSM is available as off-the-shelf drug. You may like to check it out. I bought this thru a company named Rejuveno which currently has branch in Canada, USA and some other asian country. You could click into their web, they have info on MSM and also some other supplements which is good for overall health. I have been taking the supplements for a while and I feel quite good, I usually have rashes on my back and chest, now I don't have this problem. Also, constipation is gone. www.Rejuveno.com

As I had stated earlier, I had the hyperpigmentation on my upper lip from birth control and was just devastated. I had probably spent about $5,000 in topical treatments before taking MSM. There is a small book on the subject by Vanessa Wild entitled, Melasma - Is This the Clear Solution. It's available on Amazon. I got it after reading all the information on her website:

The results are gradual, but one morning I woke up to find a patch of the hyperpigmentation had just broken up and gone away. Sections of the darkened area continue to break up over time. I now have a couple of patches but don't look like I have a mustache and don't need cover-up on my upper lip. I didn't have any adverse reactions to the MSM and continue to increase the dosage.
