I was listening to a health radio program this morning and heard about the latest find on what may cause acne.

I do know that if you suffer from acne there are certain foods that can make acne worse, like shell fish because of the high iodine content. I'm going to stay away from dairy products for a while and see if those break outs finally stop!! |

I gave up dairy in August 2004 as I had read the possibility of a link between acne and dairy products. Within a month I noticed that my skin was less oily and I was getting less break-outs. My skin didn't clear up entirely but since I started to pay more attention to my skincare regime and forced myself to drink more water, my skin has improved a lot.
I have tried going back to dairy to see what would happen to my skin and both times I started pumping my diet full of cheese, milk etc my skin has broken out.
Now I try and avoid dairy at all times but I will occasionally have a tiny bit here and there. I think it's only when I eat it regularly that it makes my skin bad. |

I've have heard this before but didn't want to believe it I love my pizza/spaghetti/lasagna COVERED in cheese, plus I live in Wisconsin (cheesehead state) where almost everything has cheese on it!! What is the cause though? How does dairy cause more acne? |

I was wodering too, what specific thing about dairy may cause breakouts?
I love dairy,so I dont want to believe that it can casue me to have acne...

This is the article I read that helped me to decide to try giving up dairy to help my mild acne. |

O/T, but I hope you're taking calcium supplements. As a person who hates milk I can tell you that if I could turn back time I'd force myself to drink it  |

Don't worry, I've been taking calcium supplements for years as I was never a big fan of milk either.
Besides my calcium tablets I also use rice milk with added calcium. If people shop around they can usually find a lot of the milk substitutes (soya, rice, oats) that have added calcium to compensate for the stuff you are missing out on in the cow juice. |

Sorry, I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to milk as "cow juice". It cracked me up!
Yeah, my problem before was that I didn't shop around and didn't replace what I wasn't putting in. I know better now  |

Im taking whole food vitamins and it has 150mcg of Iodine in it.. Is this fine cause i know too much of Iodine can worsen acne.. |

I used to be a dairyholic and when I cut it out of my diet I did notice a big difference in the amount of breakouts. Sometimes when I go on a cheese binge I notice my skin and lungs get congested. The other piece to the puzzle for me was to begin regular glycolic acid exfoliation. Clearing out the old skin this way has helped even more with keeping pores unblocked. |

I dont think this is true at all. I hate! I mean really hate dairy products(I'm latose), and still get mild acne. I never really had it till I turn 20. |

I question this "theory" as well. I mean I love milk, cheese etc. Although I don't overdue my consumption, I have not found that if I do drink a couple large glasses of milk (with oreo's) that the next day I break out, or my break outs are worse. Then days/weeks that I do not consume much in the dairy department, my friend Mr. Zit still comes to visit....so I do question this. (just my two cents) |

I am new to the EDS forum, however reading posts for quite a while, and I thought I would add my two cents. It makes a lot of sense that the hormones from the pregnant cows would be causing a breakout, because when I was breast feeding my daughter she went through a stage when her skin developed really bad milia, quite normal in newborns, and the pediatrician told me that it was caused by the overactive hormones in my system affecting her skin. In time it cleared up quite beautifully, however I am not sure if she became accustomed to my hormonal flux or if my hormones just mellowed out. Currently I am 3 1/2 mos pregnant again and consuming LARGE quantities of dairy and haven't noticed an increase in acne. What I am curious about is whether it has to do with the fact that I only drink organic milk, butter, cheese etc. These are known to have less hormones in them.  |

I agree that hormonal changes cause acne. Otherwise we wouldn't get them at that TOM. However, I also eat organic dairy and it does get to my skin. I wonder if it only affects people who have the family of skin and lung issues like me - asthma, dandruff, eczema |
