I don't know if y'all have been following along on the saga of finding the perfect eyelash growth treatment, but I'm trying to create a homemade version that combines the benefits of Lucia Essence and Ardell Lash Growth Accelerator, as well as other various protein and/or (hair) conditioning properties.

The active ingredient in Lucia is a vitamin B deriviative called "Inositol," but I've only been able to find it in powdered form. One of the main ingredients in Ardell is castor oil, which is something our great great grandmothers used to care for their lashes! And -- just for grins -- I plan to throw in "Ecrinal" which is also supposed to have hair/lash growth and/or conditioning properties.

Tne problem is that some of my lash serum ingredients are water based and others are oil based so I need some type of emulsifier. I'm currently trying "Incroquat TMC-25" that I got from the Personal Formulators because it mentioned this emulsifier was good for creating your own hair care products, but I'm not certain it is the best choice so I wanted to know if any of my other DIYers (or skincare CEOs, Darren!) can give me some other suggestions.

TIA,
Carrie

Hi Carrie,

I'm no expert on emulsifiers ... but have you tried lecithin?

I've used it in skin stuff ... and don't see why it wouldn't be beneficial for hair/lashes. On the other hand ... since I'm not an expert [and I'm still trying to make sense of the Biochemistry of Beauty book ... and her HLB recommendations! Laughing ] ... I could be dead wrong on that one. Laughing

Let's hope Darren responds to this one!

Mary

"
NOTE:Cetyl Alcohol is a vegetable based wax used as an emulsifier in lotion products. It is not an alcohol in the sense that you would think. This is not an ethanol or drying liquid alcohol ingredient. It can be confusing, however cetyl alcohol provides beneficial emulsion and emollient properties to the product. It is not an irritant and unrelated to SD alcohol or ethyl alcohol"

I've nabbed this from Gothrosary.com her products are pretty clean. I like them Smile

I've used the Cetyl alcohol from Personal Formulator to make their AHA cream. They wanted you to use two different ones so my product wasn't completely stable. I am going to order Ceteareth 25 which is a mix of the cetyl and styrl (I think).

For dispersing a small amount of oil in ACV I add a little alpha lipoic acid to the hot green tea (nuked). If you use pills u need to filter because of some other filler present.

The pills say that it is 100% Inositol with no fillers. Presuming this is true, then I can skip the filter, correct?

Where can I buy lecithin? I don't see it on the Personal Formulators site, although I did just order the Ceteareth 25, so hopefully that’ll work better then the first emulsifier I bought for the lash serum.

Hey, does anyone know what they use in the Ardell? I only get 30 minutes per day to use the internet so I don’t have time to research all the ingredients in the Ardell to figure out which one is the emulsifier....

TIA,
Carrie

Hi Carekate,

Lecithin is found in the vitamin section of your local drug store. This is why I use it ... because it's so easy to get! Laughing

It's very inexpensive ... and while it's very effective it doesn't work for everything. According to the Biochemistry of Beauty, it has an HLB of 4 ... which indicated the relativve solubility in lipids or water. The lower the HLB value denote higher lipid solubitility and the higher the HLB value denotes higher water solubility.

Ceteareth-25 has an HLB of 15-17 ... which means it has a higher water solubility.

Author of the Biochemistry of Beauty book says that one should use both a low HLB and a higher HLB for most formulations, saying that the resultant emulsions are more stable when two are used.
