With all this talk about perfume preferences, I couldn't help but be a little intrigued and curious. I've never worn perfume before (forum gasps ), because I am super sensitive to smell and suffer from migraines Anyhoo, I bought not 1 but 2 perfumes in just a few days!! Thanks a lot Mabsy, Summertimegirl and Caspers Mum!!! :P My first purchase was just this past weekend when I migrated south to Miami and bought Versace's Red Jeans Woman at the airport. Now I'm clueless about what kind of fragrance I like-- i.e. floral, woody, etc... I just knew I wanted something light. Well it turns out that I didn't care for the Versace and my husband said I smell like an old lady when I wear it, so I'll be giving that away. But last night I purchased a beautiful light fragrance that I surprisingly really like, I say surprisingly, because I was beginning to think that all perfumes give me a headache. The one I got is Issey Miyake L'EAU D' ISSEY. It smells really beautiful and I love the sleek bottle it comes in too. Now can you please tell this neophyte where do you spray your perfume and how many spritzes. :P |

Addendum:
I also tried Peter Thomas Roth's perfume but didn't care for it; although, I must say it smells really unique. It smells like artificial banana candy! |

*mabsy lets out a very predictable GASP*
L'EAU D'ISSEY is a very nice fragrance. I quite like that one myself. Glad to see that you've found one that you can wear without any problems. I find some of the Versace one give me headaches, especially Verscae Jeans Couture. Instant headache PLUS it's so potent I had trouble showering it off!
Other one you might like to try one day would be Lanvin Eclat D'Arpege or D&G Light Blue. Very light and fresh fragrances. Carolina by Carolina Hereira and Simply by Clinique are also nice floriental ones but are not too heavy. Jean Paul Gaultier Classique is also nice... Oh I could go on and on...

Sorry forgot to answer your other question. Oopsy!
How many times I spray my perfume depends on how strong it actually is. Ones like Gucci EDP (or heavier ones) last longer and are more potent so I spray less of them.
This morning I sprayed Carolina by Carolina Hereira. I sprayed once on my neck and then from about 30cm away twice on each of my arms (once above elbow once below). Sometimes I also spray just in front of me and then walk through it. I tend to do that with fragrances that don't last long on my skin (Hugo Boss I'm talking to you! :P) so at least they stick to my clothes. |

Hi Thoughtcrime!
Just wondering how your perfumes are going?? I'm glad that you satisfied your curiousity and took the plunge. I think everyone sometime or another has had or tried L'EAU D'ISSEY in their lives!! Most of my friends were given this gorgeous bottle as gifts from their boyfriends or husbands. It was one of my first favs too, I don't know why but I had a habit of wearing this one in winter--probably as it always left a beautiful scent on my soft woollen scarfs!! :P:P
I love perfumes but it takes a few tries of it before I decide on one-- I don't believe that the scent sprayed on a card is it's true scent, it's only when it's worn on the skin that you get a good idea of how it will smell on you-- I think because the oils in everyone's skin is different so a perfume that smells nice on one person might not on another. Some can give you a headache, others like you said reminds you of old grannies (cracked up when you said that!)....some are so heady and strong, they literally knock you over!!! and those are ones NOT to wear to work as you don't want to overpower a work meeting with your perfume-- just to share something funny I read in a mag! :P But I must admit, it's so fun shopping for perfume. My habit of buying perfume goes like this-- find it, put the matching lotion on my arm and spray the perfume on top, walk away and forget about it. At the end of the day, IF it leaves a nice lingering scent (meaning that it has lasted on me-- most disappear by then) AND I still like it, I'll go back and try it again. By then-- and this could be a week or a month later, I'm either in love with it or just like it. It might sound so cliche but I go purely on the memory of how I felt wearing it. If I love-love it I'll buy the matching lotion, but some strong ones like Gucci EDP is perfect on it's own. (GOD, I love this perfume at the moment, it is one sexy scent!!)
My goodness! I think I have the same perfume spray-on habit as Mabsy! She basically described it to a T in the exact order!! haha...I also do the 'walk-through' thing too!! On my neck, I spray on the centre in the "hollow" part and not on the sides below my ears. Another place I like to wear perfume is above my belly button and behind my knees-- but the trick is to spray it at a 30cm distance, not close to the skin as it'll be too concentrated in that spot.
Another thing I was told was never rub or even pat your wrists together when you've sprayed there as it "bruises" the scent. hehe! More girlie tricks of the trade learnt at boarding school-- don't know how useless it is though!! I also read somewhere that it's not good to wear perfume on the chest area as perfume has alcohol in it and can cause the skin to age when it gets exposed to the sun. Has anyone heard this as well?
When it comes to perfume, it's personal taste and to give someone a present and get it right where they adore the scent is rare I think-- I only say that as I have a few bottles my boyfriend gave me which have been sprayed once and has never seen the light again (Gucci Envy and Shiseido's Vocaise- not to sound awful and ungrateful but PEEUUWWW!!)..
Thoughtcrime, one more point about perfumes, make sure they are kept in a cool, dark place and not sitting in the light-- reason is they will turn to alcohol more quickly. My cousin says she keeps hers in their original packaging which is a shame as you want to see their pretty bottles but as long as they're not exposed to light they will keep for a few years.
Mabsy, have you got your Lola Lempicka yet?? What do you think of this perfume?

Hey Summertimegirl, ww, what a perfume connoisseur you are! I didn't know there was an art to putting on perfume. Boarding school must have been quite an interesting experience--bet you have a ton of stories!! :P Thanks for all the tips. Especally the one about storage--that's good to know as I was wondering about shelf life. I keep the perfume in my bathroom with the rest of my products and expanding samples!
So I chose a popular scent huh? Thankfully for me and my wallet, I really don't see perfumes being a vice for me. I actually tried the Lolita Lempicka and found it too strong for me, but the bottle (collector's edition) is beautiful. I finally tried the D&G Light blue but it fades on me really quickly unlike the Issey Miyake. So what do you guys do with the bottles when your finished with the perfume? I noticed that some are packaged in really exquisite bottles that are like art. |

Summertimegirl - I wish I had your resolve to resist and only buy what I absolutely love. Like you I spray perfume on my arm and then walk around with it for a day. But if I really like it that day, you can rest assured that I'll buy it the next; unless my other hald is particularily convincing and logical that day I got Lolita and I really like it. I got the EDP version (tried the EDT and was not too impressed).
Thoughtcrime - To be honest I have so many perfumes that I do not recall finishing one.... *blushes* I think it's doable when you consistently use one, but when you have around 20 and use different ones everyday.... well.... I think it's a matter of them going bad before you fnish them I would imagine that there would only be a few empty bottles I would keep (they just don't look as nice without the liquid in them). Alexander McQueen Kingdom is a bottle I'll NEVER throw away, Bulgari Omnia is another and probably Lolita Lempicka too. Jean Paul Gaultier is staying (sentimental value) and Gucci EDP is staying because the bottle is so damn heavy that you can use it in self defence if anybody breaks into your house :P
There is a special edition SOLID perfume version of Lolita Lempicka which is contained in a gold apple with a little green tree from sitting on it. It's so beautiful!

Mabsy.
ps. I've VERY surprised with Clinique's latest attempt at a floriental fragrance. "Simply" has just recently graced Australia with its presence and, unlike other Clinique perfumes, I REALLY like it! |

The only solid perfume I have is the L'Occitane (spelling?) Green Tea one. You just swipe your finger and rub it on pulse points. I think people tend to use solid perfumes more as portable convenient touch-ups during the day rather than the only thing they wear though. But I so want that Lolita one! Damn my love of green tree frogs (they're so cute! I hate Cane Toads )
