Hi everyone!
Hopefully this topic hasn't been posted to death. I did a quick search around here and didn't find anything...
I was just wondering if anyone knew of any vitamins/supplements that are good for your skin? Just something to improve my overall skin condition. Improving hair too would be a bonus!
Thanks bunches,

Hi Kel,
From memory Horsetail Silica is supposed to be good for hair, skin and nails. Vitamin C would probably help too (if you are defficient in it).

Hello,
I second the Horsetail Silica. I am using it right now and everyone continues to ask me how I get my hair so shiny.
Evening Primrose Oil or other essential oils are also good for the skin and nails and hair.
Antioxidants like Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, Grapeseed are also supposed to help the skin. I also heard Biotin is very good for the nails.
Hope this helps you. |

I agree with Mabsy on the silica.
I have used a liquid collodial silica gel in the past and found it had a tremendous result on my skin (smoother), hair (thicker and shinier), nails (stronger) as well as the whites of my eyes .
The taste leaves something to be desired so I would just put a tablespoon a day in a small glass of cranberry juice and gulp it down.
It can be expensive though ($15-20 CDN every 15 days) but if you can do it it's definitely worth it. I'm in Canada so I used to get it from GNC but my supplier doesn't have enough of a demand for it so they no longer bring it in.
Udo's Ultimate Oil Blend also has a tremendous effect on the suppleness of skin. Besides being really good for you it works like a moisturizer from within. Also excellent for the hair. Again, bad taste (for me anyway) but mixing it with a small amount of juice works. Results are relatively fast.
And I'm not sure how this one works but I have found taking a grapeseed extract has a significant effect on brightening the dark circles under my eyes. I think it has something to do with circulation.
Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot, you guys are always so helpful!
I think I'm definitely going to try some of the horsetail silica...I'm also Canadian, so I'm not looking forward to the price (eep) but I want to try it out anyways. So thanks for the suggestions!

Just a quick note:
Horsetail silica and a collodial preparation of silica aren't quite the same thing. I believe the first is plant based and the other is derived from crystal.
From what I can gather a liquid collodial preparation is absorbed quite a bit faster than horsetail silica.
I'd be really interested in hearing your results with the horestail silica though. Please keep us posted! |

Hello Leeleedeedee,
Where can I find these good stuff? I know you will not laugh at my silly question and you know so much about natural oils and skin and hair supplements. Could you please list some particular favorite brands that you haved used? Thanks a million times, Leeleedeedee. |

Hello Everyone,
I'm Canadian too. The Horsetail Silica that I use is called "Florasil" by Flora Products. It is one of the best silica products on the market. As Horsetail is a very difficult herb for the body to absorb the silica in this product is aqueously derived and bonded with bioflavanoids so the body does not only absorb the silica but other nutrients as well such as iron, calcium, boron. It is extremely well priced for the quality you get. I have been using this silica for years and it must be okay because my hair is shiny and my nails strong. I don't know if this brand is sold in the States.
That being said, the very best silica is derived from crystal, as Trinka already pointed out. She is quite correct. Colloidal silica from crystal is the best and most easily absorbed. However, since I detest the taste of this, I stick to the capsules. It's not really an awful taste but I just don't like it.
At my local health food store there are tons of pamphlets and magazines that are free and I get them all and read everything I can about all the products out there. One has to be careful about natural products because (well here in Canada anyways) it is not a regulated system and you have to know the best brands or else you can really get ripped off by unscrupulous manufacturers.
For all the Canadians, some of the very best vitamin manufacturers are: Flora, Natural Factors, Sisu, Jamieson. I also heard the the Wal Mart brand of vitamins are very good (this was said on a consumer report by our local news.)
Although I know very little I would be happy to try to help anyone if they have any questions. |

JustMe, I've tried this brand. In fact it's the only brand I tried, so I have nothing else to compare it too. It tastes interesting, like chalk... But it's not bad. I can't comment on long term effects as I only used 1 bottle. |

That's the brand that first got me singing the praises of silica.
I found it expensive though so I was happy to find an alternative from GNC. I found it had the same effect. |

Hi thoughtcrime, Trinka and everyone else... I went to GNC to purchase this product but then got very nervous when the girl behind the cash register told me she has heard it can cause digestive upset.
Any feedback? I am very eager to try this product (ps, i have no history of digestive problems or any G.I. problems)
Thanks, fantasia:) |

Hi Fantasia,
I tried that brand and it did not cause any digestive problems. I have a very sensitive G.I. tract, so if it were to cause problems I would be the first to have them.
I stopped using that brand because I didn't like the taste. It is not a bad taste, but I just didn't like it. I prefer the capsules that I use.
But, don't worry. It is a good brand and you should have good results from it. |

I take 1000mg a day of Vitamin C (helps in collagen production), Vitamin A/Beta-Carotene, & Vitamin E for my skin. I also take 5mg of Biotin for hair & nails, 1500mg of Calcium, a fabulous multivitamin, Folic Acid, fish oils, & CoQ10. |

There are alot of people taking Skin Eternal Plus (Source Naturals) which is a supplement for skin with amino acids in addition to vitamins & minerals. Has any one tried this?
I used to take a product from Sweden called Sincera that I found to be very good. This was a anti aging skin supplement. It was expensive compared to the Skin Eternal Plus.
I know that alpha lipoic acid, MSM, zinc along with Vit C & E are a great help. A high quality amino acid supplement can help quite a bit. Omega 3 & Omega 6 in the right balance are recommended. And of course the DMAE seems to be the thing currently for anti aging.
It all gets so confusing. That's why I'd rather just buy my supplements already combined with everything in the right proportions. |

Maybe a very very stupid question, so pardon my dumbness please...
But if you take these suppliments to enhance the growth of your hair for example, isn't the hair follikle going to get exhausted and produce more hair in lets say 10 years and then get tired after that and you get all bald cuz the hair follike is empty?
I know its a lame description but I how you guys understand what Im trying to say. Lemme try again:
You are suppose to race 1 km. One person starts very fast, giving all the energy he has and after the 500 meter he's speed slows down cuz he's tired to reach the finish with the same speed as he started. Another person starts with a certain speed and keeps his speed on one level and finishes the race with some energy left.
So can the first racer be compared to the hair follikle with supplement and the second racer hair follikle without the supplement? Sure the first one has his glory moments but the end for him is bad.
Oh I really hope someone can help me out on this one. TIA

I take a lot of supplements every day and the ones that I find that help the absolute most with hair and skin are essential fatty acids. I also take a multi that in addition to vitamins and minerals, it has concentrated fruits and vegetables, silica, biotin, about 85 different elements, but those are the ones that have already been mentioned.
I also take a liquid amino acid supplement that has collagen added and it has helped with skin firmness and smoothness.
I also use aloe vera topically, as well as in a drink and aloe has been known to promote collagen growth.
I'd say for anyone the most important "supplement" for any health need, including the condition of your skin, is water. It not only hydrates the skin, but it also is our greatest source of a complete mineral complement and minerals are great for your skin and connective tissue.

I take the following to keep my skin clear and looking supple:
Flaxseed oil, MSM, potassium, zinc, selenium, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium. I read an article years ago on deficiencies that caused acne and so started on this regimen. It seemed to work well. I totally believe in internal antioxidants, too. Whenever I skip the C and E for a few days, I feel like I can see a difference in my skin right away. |

I'm intrigued by the reviews on Horsetail Silica. I'm definitely going to try it. I can't find Florasil where I live so I'l try GNC. Leeleedeede and Trinka, could you give me the exact name of the Horsetail supplement at GNC? |

Okay, I'm not Leeleedeede or Trinka, but I DO take a silica (horsetail) supplement! You should be able to find it in the health supplements/vitamin section of any pharmacy or supermarket -- which is where I got mine! Basically, look for a 'nutritional supplement' for hair/skin/nails, then check the ingredients to be sure it includes silica...I think mine is "Nature's Therapy (or maybe Nature's Remedy) Hair/Skin/Nails" formula. In addition to the silica, it also contains MSM which is supposed to promote healthy/shiny hair and hair-growth.

Hello Evelyn,
Be careful which Horsetail Silica you buy!!! Silica from the herb "Horsetail" is extremely difficult to absorb, and there are alot of companies out there that rip you off. All Silica products are not the same. If you buy it in capsule form you must be sure that it is formulated in a manner in which the body can absorb the Silica. That's why the only one I believe in is "Florasil" made by Flora Products. The best on the market in terms of Silica absorbtion by the body in capsule form. However, I did not buy it at GNC although it could very well be sold there.
As stated in the above posts, the best liquid source of Silica comes from Colloidal Crystal and this can probably be sold at GNC because it is very popular and in my opinion the best. But this is "liquid silica." One of the above posts has the picture of the box that it comes in. It's manufactured in Germany by: Anton Hubner and you should see that name somewhere on the box. I don't use this product because I just didn't like the taste. But from everything I have read this is the best Silica on the market. Very well absorbed by the body. |
