This is a versatile mask because you can adjust the thickness and intensity of the cleansing effect you want.
The size of the clay particles are MUCH better than fine kaolin clay. Because I find kaolin clay mixed with water based masks to be impossible to rinse clean without a second or third try. And that's the last thing I want to do once my face has gone through a clay mask. The loess clay pretty much rinses clean without needing to sponge or wipe (though there are Dr H sponges on EDS )
I apply this mask once to twice a week, for tighter and clearer pores.
After the mask, I can literally feel small plugs coming out of my skin. If I run my hands over my skin, esp more congested areas, I feel small round 'grits' on the surface. I think after your skin starts to dry it purges the surface impurities straight away.
Warning: Initially you may get quite LARGE and painful breakouts after the first few times, or if you are under a lot of stress or not eating well. I don't know what the loess clay does, but it sure has good suction power.
I know many people say the mask is very harsh and drying, but there is an art to getting the texture right.
Also, as the Dr H beautician told me, and according to the instructions, you must keep the mask WET for 10-20 mins. But if you let it dry (like lazy me), the purging effect will be a lot stronger.
To use, you mix about 1-2tsp (depending on the intensity of cleansing) with a ratio of 2 parts clay to one part liquid*.
This liquid can be ordinary tap water, a botanical hydrosol (like lavender, chamomile, tea tree, and witch hazel if you want stronger effect).
I have used the Dr Hauschka Steam Concentrate as the liquid mixture, and because of the high plant alcohol content it may put some people off - it smells of it, and sensitive skins may feel it. But I had no problems.
The price is the biggest put-off for buying this. It costs $60!! in New Zealand for a sachet. Of course you can source overseas for better prices.
This mask is a brown dried clay that comes in a jar, refills come in a sachet.
Ingredients
Loess, Indian Cress (Tropaeolum Majus) Extract, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) Extract, Corn (Zea Mays) Starch.
I hope you guys get a chance to try this mask, because it allows you to mix it according to your own skin type (not just for oilies), and has a great cleansing action. |

I want!!! I've been wanting this mask since first reviews of it started popping up on EDS and I still haven't got around to trying it! Thanks for the tip about mixing it with the steam concentrate (I actually quite like the smell of that one now).
ETA: I just realised that I'll be in Germany for a weekend (work related - bleh!) in about two months time so I'll try to get it over there if I can find it in a short period of time and also stock up on other Dr H stuff |

hi mabsy,
i'd DEFINITELY recommend getting some dr h products on your trip to germany. the prices are significantly (like half price) cheaper than in new zealand, so i imagine the same would be true for australia.
i emailed a woman at wala in germany for a list of places in munich (where i was) that stocked dr h, i'll try and find her address for you. she was really helpful actually.
Kiwigirl.
UPDATE: check out this thread, it has the woman's address in it -

I have had great results from this mask as well - love it.
When I mix it I also add a touch of moisturiser and a drop of ylang ylang oil, doesnt appear to be so drying |

Thank you! I'll email her and find out where I can get Dr H. That's a great idea because I won't have much time for shopping unfortunately and also won't have a car... |

I've emailed. No response yet but I'm hoping she'll respond sooner or later. I know it's much cheaper over there so I'm excited |

I believe you are supposed to keep placing damp compresses over your face. You could also try sitting in a steamy bathroom. |

Hey Carol
Chimera is right, you can put a damp towel on it when it stars to dry, because the clay isn't fine and powdery it wont leave big ugly traces on the towel.
But if you use steaming method, you will have to do it continuously before it even starts to dry, I don't think steam can create enough dampness without a lot of heat.
With blackheads, I feel that mine either begin to come out without creating a pimple with it.. Do it continuously for a few weeks to see good results.

personally, i'd love to be doing it twice a week (and when i first got it i was doing that and my skin was fantastic) but i always seem to be so busy that i don't find that time to pamper myself this way however my skin is also pretty good at the moment so i'm getting reinforced for my inaction... very bad... will use this tonight!

I would recommend using the clay mask about once a week (after a facial steam bath) and then maybe a rejuvenating mask once a week. This is my ideal routine, though I don't really stick to it due to time and financial reasons. :/ |

I try to use it twice a week too, but sometimes it's like three weeks before I find the time. Depends on how you feel, if you find it too strong perhaps once a week.
If i have been using make up a lot, then I'd do it twice a week. |

Sorry to get of track a bit but I've been using argiletz green clay from the health shop,it is quite good but I find afterwards there are blackheads that you can see are loosened and I have to pop them out.Bit annoying I want something to draw them out with having to squeeze. This mask dries heaps tight too. |

I quite like the Dermalogica Skin Refining mask.
I have so many packets of various clays lying around that I am a bit hesitant about going buying any more clay masks.
The one at Neal's Yard looks good and it's only about £4. |

Gosa -
Firstly, do continue to use the mask, even more regularly, to help dry out the zits and bring them to the surface.
Do you also have Dr H steam concentrate or clarifying toner? If so, I would use liberal amounts on my face and spot treat twice a day.
Also, the rejuvenating mask is awesome for continuous day/night treatment. For the first time, I would use a generous amount all over the face overnight, then do that again after a few days. You can also use the rejuvenating mask during the day, everyday or every other day for about a week.
I also find that if I apply Yonka Juvenil and Decleor Ylang Ylang balm straight after the mask treatment, my skin is very clear the next day. Of course larger pimples would take longer to calm down and heal.
Just be extra caring for your skin for the next few weeks to help with the purging, and try not to use pore clogging products that might defeat the whole purpose of a deep skin cleansing. |

the unique cleaning mask that won't dry out your face after rinse it
but it is troublesome to mix it by yourself.
it could be mixed with the revital mask and the toner, and the effect will be better than mixed with water.
my express may not be very clear, sorry |

this 'purging' quality of the mask is making me reluctant to try it once more.... it took several days for my breakouts to fade, even my colleagues are noticing them!! am i going to like this mask after a while? |
