Saving the self image
When we think of makeup, fashion makeup for women usually
comes to mind. Fashion makeup is fine for the everyday consumer. What often is
not taken into consideration is that the population includes all ethnicities,
as well as different genders and ages, including children, teenagers and the
elderly. Each wants to be beautiful—or handsome—and feel confident. The
field of medical cosmetics uses makeup as a therapeutic intervention to
normalize the appearance of those who have facial disfigurements caused by
surgery, disease, trauma, an acquired skin discoloration, a congenital defect or
birth anomaly. The use of cosmetics in the rehabilitation of these patients
promotes psychological well-being, self-esteem and social acceptance. If you
know someone who could use medical cosmetics, contact your skin care
professional for references.
Sleep, sweet sleep
For thousands of years, sleep has been associated with death—not
in a negative light, but rather as a mirror of what occurs in death. It is said
that in sleep, the body leaves momentarily to commune with a more remote world,
and the soul is fed during this passage. During sleep, you are a cosmic
traveler, but if you don’t get enough sleep, you may not reach your
destinations. Hurrying back to the waking world, you may arise tired and
unprepared for the challenges ahead. From a holistic standpoint, sleep is
regarded as necessary to health as food and water. Yet in America, more than
70 million people suffer from one or more sleep disorders, the most common being
insomnia. Experts tell us that we need at least eight hours of sleep a night,
but only 35% of adults sleep that much. The average American sleeps six hours
and 58 minutes during the workweek.
Massage 101
Massage includes a number of techniques that use pressure and
friction on the muscles of the body for therapeutic benefit, including general
health; relaxation, pampering or beauty; pain relief or rehabilitation; and
psychological transformation. Sports massage is one of the most popular types
of massage. It consists of specific components designed to reduce injuries,
alleviate inflammation and provide warmup for amateur and professional
athletes before, during, after and within their training regimens.
Skin care with a TWIST
Cosmeceuticals refers to a new category of cosmetics that have
medicinal benefits and contain advanced formulations of ingredients with the
ability to penetrate the skin barrier, such as alpha hydroxy acids. The term
is not yet categorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but already is
in use in the salon and spa industry. Well-formulated cosmecuticals can have a
variety of anti-aging benefits. If you are using products that claim to have
medicinal benefits, be sure to ask your skin care professional whether you need
to take any special precautions, including daily sunscreen application.
