Breathing Exercise

A simple breathing exercise, combined with inhaling herbal essences, can help calm the body with slower and deeper breaths, as if in a state of relaxation or meditation.

1. Spray an herbal essence around the body.
2. Exhale completely through the mouth, making a “whoosh” sound.
3. Close the mouth and inhale quietly through the nose to a mental count of four.
4. Hold breath for a count of seven
5. Exhale completely through the mouth again, making a “whoosh” sound to the count of eight.
6. This is one breath. Inhale again and repeat cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

When completely relaxed, spray herbal essences around the body, close eyes, take a few more deep cleansing breaths through the nose and inhale. Then, exhale through the mouth while concentrating on an inner vision of peace. Repeat breathing cycle throughout the day to re-capture feelings of serenity.

Reading is Believing

The ingredient list on a cosmetic container is the only place where consumers can readily find out the truth about products. Consumers can check the listing to identify substances they wish to avoid. Becoming familiar with what cosmetics contain can help counter some of the alluring appeal showcased elsewhere on the product. “Our best friend is the ingredient label,” says beauty consultant and 14-year veteran consumer reporter Paula Begoun. “Spending the time to read it may be all that is needed to protect ourselves from hurting our skin.”
But the ingredient list, although a mandatory requirement on cosmetics, is also the most difficult part of the label to understand. John Bailey, PhD, director of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Office of Cosmetics and Colors, admits that most of us don’t recognize the names of the ingredients listed because there are thousands available to chemists creating a wide variety of products. But there’s no way to change that, he says, and still accurately identify the substances that are used. Consumers can, however, obtain specific information about a cosmetic ingredient in various references, such as the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook, published by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, and available at most public libraries or at the Office of the Federal Register, 1100 L St., NW, Washington, DC 20408. The FDA recognizes the association as a reliable source for substances that have been identified as cosmetic ingredients, as well as their definitions and trade names.
What’s In?
Think smart, sporty and sophisticated! This season’s makeup palette emphasizes colors in concert with fabric usage, overall silhouette, wardrobe essentials, accessories, cosmetic direction and hairstyle suggestions. Fashion designers create their signature collections each season from within set parameters of what is happening in the ever-changing fashion world. These set parameters act as guidelines for makeup, as well.
Gray is the dominant color of the season. Additional colors include the entire range of red, camel beige, winter white, and shades of green, blue and pink. This season also emphasizes the rich palette of neutrals: chocolate brown, charcoal gray and midnight navy. For fabrics, think texture, such as thick tweeds, full-bodied cashmeres, heavy wools and chunky knits. The tweed jacket, long skirts, tailored career suits, sexy to sporty wools, wide-legged pants and knit sportswear are wardrobe essentials. Accessories to purchase include necklaces ranging from chokers, rhinestones, semi-precious stones, rich colored pearls and leaf motifs; sleek little belts; wraps and scarves; fancy mules; and fur trim for accent only!
On the makeup front, beautifully flushed cheeks are a major technique and trend, applied in a rounded, full
D. motion. This gives the cheeks a naturally flushed appearance. As for lips, classic red has made a comeback! The lip shape of choice is full-mouthed, and lips are perfectly lined and filled in with a matching red color. Keep in mind that cosmetics should enhance one’s features, not overpower!
Sophisticated, feminine hairstyles complement this well-blended, refined makeup application this season. Hairstyles cover a broad range of styles, from the disco Afro days of the ‘70s to the classic, short and sassy styles such as the bob and pixie. Long, flowing hairpieces allow clients to have short and sassy hair for day, and long and flowing
hair for night.
